The short of it is that no, you don’t need to have an active PS Plus subscription to play Fortnite. So why have a premium option anyway?
What does a PS Plus subscription offer me?
Fortnite is available on every platform under the sun, that includes the PlayStation console family.
Apart from that, the game also supports cross-platform play, which can make things a bit confusing when it comes to subscriptions like PS Plus.
You don’t need to have an active PS Plus subscription to play Fortnite. This applies to both PS4 and PS5. In fact, PS Plus isn’t necessary for any free-to-play games (though there may be a few exceptions). Therefore, you can rest easy that Fortnite is both free to download, install, and play online without any cost to you.
It’s essential to keep in mind that you still need to pay for any paid Fortnite content, such as skins and emotes. This includes the Battle Pass. To get paid content, you need to buy V-Bucks from the PS Store. Unfortunately, you can’t buy this currency from another platform and use it on your PS4 or PS5. However, the content you buy with your V-Bucks can be used on any device.
What’s also important to remember is that for any games that you need to pay to play, you still need a PS Plus subscription for their online modes.
What Do I Need to Play Fortnite on a Playstation Console?
Playing Fortnite on a PS4 and PS5 doesn’t require much. Here’s everything that you need:
- A PS4 or PS5 console (the game isn’t available on other Playstation consoles)
- A total of 18GB of free storage space on your console’s hard drive (8GB are needed for the installation process)
- A PlayStation Network account (it’s free to make one), so don’t confuse it with PS Plus)
- An internet connection through Wi-Fi or a wired connection (wired ethernet connections are recommended for best performance)
As you can see, it’s pretty easy to start playing Fortnite on a Playstation console, and it’s entirely free if you don’t want to buy content.
